Unemployment is on the rise and this has made youth mentally weak, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Kota Srinivas Poojary said on Saturday.

He was speaking at the Job Fair, organised by Sanchalana as part of Swami Vivekananda Jayanthi and National Youth Day, on the premises of
Dr G Shankar First Grade College.

Poojary said job fair provides an opportunity for the aspirants to obtain jobs.

“Only 1% of the population gets government employment in state. About 50 % of the posts are lying vacant in all the government departments.
The government in order to avoid financial burden is employing staff on contract basis,” he said.

He said in the past, on the recommendation of an elected representative candidates secured job as Anganwadi workers.

Now, the recruitment is carried out based on reservation, as per recruitment rules and on the basis of merit.

Udupi Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis said getting employed is a challenge in the present scenario. The number of job aspirants in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada are very high.

Priyanka said youth are moving away from farming. Owing to lack of knowledge and support, the youth are not attracted towards farming. There are ample opportunities to convert farming into a profitable venture.
