Heavy rain next four days in coastal belt: Met Dept

Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rain in the next four days in coastal belt.

At a meeting chaired by Urban Development and Housing Minister U T Khader to review rain relief measures at the DC’s office on Saturday, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumar said that the Met department had predicted of 160 mm rain on each day till July 11.

“Precautionary measures have been initiated to handle the flood situation,” he said.

Puttur Assistant Commissioner H K Krishnamurthy said that the water level in river Netravathi at the confluence of Nethravathi and Kumaradhara rivers at Uppinangady has increased by 27 metres and is expected to reach the danger level of 31.5 metre in the next two days.

‘Remain in district HQ’

Khader directed panchayat development officers, village accountants, staff of rural development and panchayat raj, revenue, urban development and municipal administration not to go on leave and to take up relief measures on war footing.

The Minister directed the assistant commissioner to chair a meeting regarding compensation issues and submit a report to the DC.

“The government will provide funds for compensatory measures. Boats have been provided to all taluks for rescue operations. Private boats may used if need be. The staff of urban local bodies should properly coordinate with their revenue department counterparts,” Khader said.

ADC Kumar said that district had received 1,957 mm rainfall till July 7 as against the normal rain rain of 1,451 mm, which was 135 % more. About 234 mm rain had been recorded on Friday alone.

So far, 10 persons have lost their lives in rain related mishaps since January. Compensation of Rs five lakh each has been disbursed to five families. Four more families need to be compensated. As many as 803 houses have been damaged and compensation amount has been disbursed to the owners of 727 houses. As many as 112 temporary houses have been damaged and out of these, compensation has been extended to 102 house owners.
