Karnataka: No action from Congress government to fulfill its poll promise three months after SEP report

Bengaluru: Even three months after the State Education Policy (SEP) commission submitted its report, there is no action from the Congress government to implement the same.

Despite repeated reminders from Higher Education Minister Dr M C Sudhakar, the officials in his department have not taken measures to constitute an expert committee to review the report, which has to be placed before the Cabinet for further action.

It was an embarrassing moment for Sudhakar when reporters asked him about the SEP review committee report on Thursday and his department officials, including the principal secretary, were not aware of the committee that the minister was talking about.

The minister then went on to brief principal secretary Khushboo Choudhary about the formation of the review committee.

“As per the directions of the chief minister, we need to form a committee to review the report and the same has to be placed before the Cabinet,” Sudhakar told the principal secretary.

Clarifying on the same, Sudhakar said, “We have been asked to submit the report in a concise format. We will form a committee in two days and a report will be placed before the Cabinet in next two months”.

Coming to the rescue of his department officials, Sudhakar said, “The principal secretary of the higher education department was changed three times in the last few months and that could be the reason for the confusion regarding the formation of the review committee”.

The minister said that the report would be put in the public domain once it was available in concise format.

It can be recalled that the rejection of the National Education Policy and implementation of SEP was one of the major poll promises of the Congress.

Soon after coming to power, the Congress government constituted a commission to frame the SEP and appointed former University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Sukhadeo Thorat as its head.

The commission submitted the final report to the government on August 9, 2025.
