The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of former chief minister Siddaramaiah “misbehaving” with a woman and has directed the Karnataka police to register an FIR against the Congress leader.

“I want police to file an FIR and press charges against him. That will be a good punishment for him. I have written to Karnataka DGP (director general of police) to take action against him,” NCW chief Rekha Sharma told a news channel.

She termed Siddaramaiah’s conduct “shocking” observing that he not just appeared in the video (which surfaced in social media) shouting at the woman but he also “removed” her dupatta. The Commission has asked the police to “thoroughly” investigate the case.

The Congress disapproved Siddaramaiah’s conduct, reacting to the incident. “We are strongly of the view that people in public life, people in political space need to be sensitive about the manner in which colleagues, especially colleagues belonging to another gender should be treated,” Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said at a press conference here when asked to comment.
