NSO to launch two socio-economic surveys in Karnataka

Bengaluru: The National Statistical Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, has organised a 3-day regional training camp, marking the launch of two socio-economic surveys in state.

The camp began on Tuesday. Carried out by the Field Operations Department (FOD) of NSO, the surveys set to take off in July are the Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey (DTES) and National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). They are being conducted as part of the 80th National Sample Survey. 

While DTES aims to collect info on household expenditure on domestic overnight and same-day trips, NHTS is being conducted with help of Ministry of Railways to collect data on origin-destination, modes of transport used, trip purposes, and travel frequency.

“The surveys were planned in 2019. We had planned everything, but had to be put off due to Covid-19. This will help us understand the impact of tourism sector on the economy. Data collection concerning tourism involves multiple aspects like hospital and travel. The training camp will help understand the terms of the survey better,” said Saji George, deputy director general, coordination and quality control division, NSO (south zone).

Ninety officials from South Karnataka are taking part in the 3-day workshop. P A Mini, deputy director general, Household Survey Division, NSO, N S Patil, assistant director, NSO (FOD), and S K Chikkabeeriah, joint director, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Karnataka, were present at the inaugural programme.
