<p>The Basava Jayanthi celebration programme organised by the Zilla Panchayat and Department of Kannada and Culture at Basavanagudi turned out to be an occasion to praise officials.<br /><br />The programme scheduled to start at 10.30 am started late. Except for nadageethe and raithageethe sung by the students and singing of Basavanna’s vachanas by women group, the whole programme seemed like dedicated to praising the officers.<br /><br />Speaking on the occasion, M Madegowda, Assistant Director of Department of Kannada and Culture started bestowing praises on Deputy Commissioner N Manjula. <br /><br />He said that she war responsible for making systematic arrangements for the programme and went on speaking of her good qualities. Then coming to the next point, he praised Assistant <br />Commissioner Satish Kumar and Additional Deputy Commissioner T Venkatesh as ‘Ashwini gods’. Her did not forget to speak good about even media-persons.<br /><br />The Basava Jayanthi celebrations, which began on this note continued to be full of confusions as the people who stepped on the dais to felicitate dignitaries chose to be on the dais till the programme was over. They were busy moving on the dias, speaking to each other, which created disturbance.<br /><br />Key speaker of the programme seer Mahadev of Basava Kalyana Mutt expressed disappointment over people’s negligence towards seers. </p>.<p>He said the people in North Karnataka respected the seers and refer to them as Basavanna.<br />Legislator K P Bachegowda said that Basavanna’s dream of eradicating untouchability could not be realised yet. Various programmes on social reformer Basavanna were lined up for the day. <br /><br />The district administration in association with zilla panchayat and Kannada and Culture Department had organised the programme at the T Chennaiah Rangamandira in the town. <br /><br />District In-charge Minister R Varthur Prakash who inaugurated the programme, called on the people to emulate values laid down by Basavanna through the vachanas. <br /><br />The auditorium had many empty chairs to which the minister said lack of publicity has resulted in poor audience. <br /><br />The government provides Rs 50,000 towards organising such a programme. It should be utilised effectively, Varthur said.<br /><br />Later, Mohammed Khasim delivered a special lecture on Basavanna and Shivanand Heruru and Seema Raikar rendered vachanas. <br /><br />Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar Meena, Zilla Panchayat CEO P Rajendra Cholan, member Mangamma Muniswamy, SP Ramnivas Sepat, Akhila Bharata Veerashiava Mahasabha district chapter president A S Sadashivaiah and others were present. <br /><br />Blood donation<br /><br />A voluntary blood donation programme was jointly organised by Parvathamma B R Muniyappa Charitable Trust and Narasimharaja District Hospital at Basaveshwara temple, to mark the occasion. Akhila Bharata Veerashiava Mahasabha district chapter president A S Sadashivaiah inaugurated the blood donation camp. <br /><br />Book release<br /><br />Poet Sharanappa Gabbur’s ‘Bayalu bhoomi’, an anthology of poems was released at Paramitha Study and Research Centre at Jayanagar. Centre director Dammamithra Vijaykumar presided. <br /><br /></p>
