Giving a reprieve to all the government college PU lecturers without a BEd degree, who were recruited in 2008 and 2013, the Primary and Secondary Education department has allowed them to enrol as regular students in any of the 300 BEd colleges in the State.
As many as 1,349 PU lecturers recruited in 2008 and 991 in 2013 will continue to get their salary during their study period, said a press release from Dr M S Manjunath, special officer to the minister for Primary and Secondary Education.
CM approves decision
The press release also said that the chief minister has approved the decision. Guest lecturers will be recruited to the posts that will fall vacant after the lecturers enrol themselves for the BEd course, the release stated. However, the department is yet to issue an order to this effect.
BEd degree was made compulsory for PU lecturers since 2008. Lecturers who didn’t have a BEd degree were asked to get one through the mode of distance education either from KSOU or IGNOU. However, the lecturers complained that there were not many BEd seats in these varsities.
The lecturers had staged a protest in front of the office of the Pre-University Education Department in this regard five days ago.
“I am extremely happy. It will encourage us to complete our BEd," said Sabina, a lecturer at a government PU college in Malur taluk, Kolar district.
