Police should check misuse of nuclear, radioactive materials: KPA Director

Mysuru: Karnataka Police Academy (KPA) Director S L Channabasavanna said, the Police should check misuse of nuclear and other radioactive materials for destructive and anti-national activities.

He was speaking during the inaugural event of a two-day workshop on ‘Handling and Investigation of Nuclear and Radioactive Materials’ for Police officials, organised by the KPA, in Mysuru, recently.

Channabasavanna said, this is a new subject for Police officials and a workshop on it is being held for the first time in the entire South India. “While nuclear and radioactive materials are used in industries, hospitals and also for environment-related studies, it is essential for the development of the nation. However, the authorities concerned in the respective sectors and also those related with the security of the nation, like the Police, should be cautious, to ensure that the materials are not used for any destructive or anti-national activity,” he said.

“The materials are very volatile. If not used carefully, they may cause irreparable damage to the environment and also the health of all living beings, including humans. It will not just affect the present generation, but also the future generations. So, the Police officials, who get the first information on any mishap or destruction in the environment or society, should be aware of the materials,” Channabasavanna said.

Senior Scientist from Baba Atomic Research Centre Sheshadri Murali, Scientist Raman Ravishankar, Abhishek Yadav from Amity University, Delhi, and KPA Assistant Director S N Sandesh Kumar were present.
