Relentless rains cause widespread damage in Malnad, coast

Bengaluru: Heavy rains, coupled with gusty winds, for the last few days have caused widespread damage in coastal districts and Malnad region.  

The torrential rain in Malnad districts has damaged houses, crops, roads and power infrastructure.

A 35-year-old woman died after a portion of her house wall collapsed on her at Hanagallu in Somwarpet taluk (Kodagu district) in the wee hours of Saturday. While Sushma died in her sleep, her three children and brother Akshay suffered injuries. 

With Cauvery and Kannike rivers in spate, Triveni Sangama in Bhagamandala has submerged for the fourth time this monsoon. 

With tree falls and uprooting of electricity poles, several parts of the district are plunged in darkness.

Traffic on the national highway near Suntikoppa was stalled for hours after a tree fall.

Shantalli saw 200 mm of rain in just 24 hours (ending 8.30 am on Saturday), Bhagamandala witnessed 170 mm, while it was 110 mm and 80 mm, in Srimangala and Somwarpet, respectively.

Heavy rain continued to pound Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts. Tunga river is flowing above danger mark in Thirthahalli and Shivamogga.

Incessant rain in Chikkamagaluru district increased water levels in Tunga, Bhadra, Netravathi and Hemavathi. Tunga river inundated bath ghat and Sandhya Vandane Mantap in Sringeri.

Heavy outflows from Tunga and Bhadra reservoirs triggered flooding fears at Ukkadagatri, the abode of Karibasaveshwara (Ajjayya) temple, in Davangere district. Steps leading to a view point at Devimane Ghat in Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada were swept away in the rain. 

A minor landslide was reported on Sirsi-Kumta highway (NH 766E). Movement of heavy vehicles was banned. Water level in Aghanashini, Badagani and Gundabala rivers dipped as rains receded in Kumta, Honnavar taluks.

Intermittent spells of heavy rain lashed Dakshina Kannada & Udupi districts. Gusty winds uprooted electricity poles, while tree falls at several places hit traffic in the twin districts.
