Riders for fish transporation vehicles

Owners will be told to install tanks to collect in leachate in fish transportation vehicles (lorries) to prevent it from spilling on to the roads.

The leachate is causing a nuisance to vehicle riders as the two-wheelers skid on the roads dampened by the wastewater. Also, the stink, emanating from the wastewater, creates a nuisance to the general public. The complaints regarding this are voiced at every weekly phone-in programme conducted at the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate.

Speaking to the press, DCP (Crime and Traffic) Lakshmi Ganesh K said the lorry owners have been told to install a tank in the vehicle to collect the leachate. This was told to them during a meeting of fish transportation lorry owners, the Police Department and the district administration on Monday, he said.

A lorry with a capacity of one tonne should contain a tank of 50-litre capacity. The fish should be transported in insulated vehicles only. Also, the Fisheries Department has been asked to check the fish transportation lorries for the requirement of leachate collection tank and insulator at the starting point itself. The owners have also been advised to clean the lorries on a regular basis, he explained.

The Regional Transportation Authority will issue an order in this regard soon. As per the order, the violators would be fined Rs 5,000 for the first offence and the vehicle permit will be seized for the second offence, he said.

During the phone-in programme, a citizen from Surathkal said that there is a need to shift the autorickshaw stand near Surathkal bus stand to a nearby place.

A woman complained that several bus stands in the city are not citizen-friendly as they are too narrow and are situated in an elevated position. The elderly find it extremely difficult, she said.

A man complained that the contractors of the pedestrian path near Ramakrishna Hostel in Lalbaug have made the road narrow and it has increased traffic congestion. DCP (Law and order) Hamunantharaya said that the issue has come to the notice of the ACP (traffic) and a complaint has been received in this regard.

A complaint came in from a citizen against a man, who has duped a senior citizen by availing of a loan in her name, without her knowledge.
