The decision of the government to terminate the 'D' group staff and the non-clinical staff at the government hospitals is an injustice done to the workers, said Government Hospital Cleanliness Workers Association District President P R Bharat.

Bharat while addressing reporters said that a memorandum will be submitted to the health minister through the deputy commissioner on April 29.

More than 400 employees had been working on a contract basis in the government hospitals located across the district. The state government had decided to terminate and reduce the number of employees to 200. The order stalled due to the election code of conduct could be re-issued in June. The workers are feeling insecure, he said.

Bharat said that the contract workers do not have any job security and urged the government to provide minimum wages to all 'D' group and non-clinical workers. PF and ESI facilities should compulsorily be provided to them.

There should be a facility to avail leave up to four days in a month. Two pairs of uniform should be provided to the workers. A monthly salary of Rs 18,000 should be given to the contract workers, he urged.

Association secretary H Janaki said that she has been working in the hospital for the past 20 years. Termination from work will force her and her family onto the streets.

If terminated, she may have to commit suicide, she said.

Association treasurer Lokesh and member B S Manjula were present.
