<p>As many as 28,687 candidates will receive various degrees at the 96th convocation of the University of Mysore scheduled to be held at 11.30 am at Crawford Hall here on April 11. <br /><br /></p>.<p>The ceremony, unlike previous years, is significant as the university is celebrating its centenary this year. <br /><br />Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, Vice-chancellor K S Rangappa said various degrees will be conferred on 17, 221 women (60 per cent) and 11, 466 men (40 per cent) students in the convocation ceremony. Of the total 308 medals and 173 prizes, women have bagged the lion’s share. Among 461 candidates receiving PhD degrees, 285 are men (62 per cent) and 176 are women (38 per cent),” added Rangappa. <br /><br />Keeping with the tradition, three eminent persons have been selected for Honoris Causa (honorary doctorate) to be conferred by the varsity. They are Infosys co-founder chairman N R Narayana Murthy, Adhichunchanagiri Mutt seer Nirmalanandanatha Swami and Niti Ayog Member Vijay Kumar Saraswat.<br /><br />Reacting to a query, Rangappa said they have been selected for the honour in compliance with the new guidelines set by Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, also Chancellor of the varsity.<br /><br />Prof Rangappa said the main ceremony of the convocation is scheduled to be held at 11.30 am on the day. Narayana Murthy also scheduled to deliver the convocation address. <br /><br />The governor will preside over the programme. Higher Education Minister T B Jayachandra will grace the ceremony.<br /><br />The degrees will be presented at a ceremony scheduled to be held at 4 pm the same day. Dr Undurthi Das, editor-in-chief, Lipids in Health and Disease, Current Nutrition and Food Science, USA, a journal, will take part in the programme. <br /><br />Valedictory on July 22<br />The valedictory ceremony of the centenary celebrations of the University of Mysore will be advanced by five days to July 22, against the scheduled July 27, Prof Rangappa said. <br /><br />The university had sought the consent of Vice President Hamid Ansari to deliver the valedictory address at the ceremony. </p>
