<p> The 800-MW first unit of Yermaras Thermal Power Station (YTPS) in Raichur will start power generation in April-May this year.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Speaking to media persons after inspecting the work on YTPS here on Wednesday, Karnataka Power Corporation Managing Director M Maheshwara Rao said that power generation by the first unit of YTPS during April would help to meet the increased demand for power during summer. He said that the second unit would start generation two months after the operationalisation of the first unit.<br /><br />“The eight units of Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) have been generating power to their installed capacity. We have been making all efforts to sustain the present generation of 41 million units per day,” Rao said.<br /><br />The thermal power stations at Raichur and Ballari have not been facing any shortage of coal. RTPS has been getting seven lakh metric tonnes of coal per month while four lakh MT of coal is being supplied to BTPS, he added.<br /><br />The guidelines issued by the Ministry of Environment are being scrupulously followed in the management of fly ash generated by RTPS. The directions of the Upa Lokayukta, who visited the plant on Tuesday, will also be adhered to. The demands of the people who lost their land for the two projects will be considered sympathetically, he said.<br /><br />Workers’ safety<br /><br />Rao said that the work on the two units of YTPS cannot be completed in a hurry. “We have to lay emphasis on the safety of the workers at the site. The contractors executing the work have been asked to follow safety measures,” he added.<br /><br />Two labourers working on an underground pipe supplying water to the cooling tower of YTPS (second unit) were buried alive after mud caved in on them, last week.<br /><br />The State government has planned to set up a 350-MW gas-based power plant at Yelahanka near Bengaluru. As much as 70 per cent to 80 per cent of the State’s power need is being met by the Karnataka Power Corporation. It has been planned to increase this capacity to 90 per cent of the energy demand, Rao said.<br /><br />KPCL Director (Technical) T Bhaskar and RTPS Executive Director C Venugopal were present.<br /><br /></p>
