<p>Thiruvananthapuram: A 32-year-old Malayali who got trapped in the Russia-Ukraine warzone was reportedly killed recently during an offensive. The family of the Thrissur native, named Binil Babu, received the news regarding his death through another Malayali present at the warzone, as well as from embassy officials. An official confirmation, however, is still awaited.</p><p>Binil, along with Jain Kurian, 27, was trapped in the war zone since June 2024. They were allegedly recruited to the Russian mercenary illegally after being taken to Russia by a recruitment agency offering electrician jobs.</p><p>They were making attempts to escape from the war zone for quite some time. The deceased, Sandeep, aged 36, belonging to Nayarangadi near Chalakudy in Thrissur, was also recruited illegally to work for the Russian army. Several youths from the country were illegally recruited to the Russian military by agents. Two youths from Kerala managed to return home a few months back.</p><p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken up the matter with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his previous visit to Moscow and the latter had responded positively. The CBI also carried out raids at various parts of the country and arrested many recruiting agents who were illegally recruiting youths to the Russian mercenary.</p><p>Ajith Kolassery, chief executive officer, NORKA Roots - an agency of Kerala government for pravasi welfare, said that so far there was no official confirmation.</p><p>A relative of Binil, identified as Saneesh, told media that Binil's wife Joisy got information from an official in the Indian embassy about the death. But the family is yet to get any official confirmation.</p><p>Binil, son of Babu and Laila of Kuttanellur in Thrissur, left behind his wife and four-month-old son. He was earlier working in Oman. Binil and others were taken to Russia in April. They were initially assigned to give training to members in the mercenary. Later, they were deployed in the warzones. Binil had communicated with the family on January 4.</p>
