Women in law face bias, affects not just advocates, but those on bench too: CJI

Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana on Tuesday rued the fact women in the legal profession face bias, both from their colleagues or litigants, and this affects not just advocates, but also those on the bench.

In his address at the felicitation of Supreme Court judge Justice Hima Kohli by Women in Law and Litigation (WILL), he said: "There are various barriers that women face in the legal profession that merit consideration... the continued prevalence of certain attitudes about the role of women in society. This issue is a problem a woman faces regardless of the type of employment. Another issue is the bias that women face, whether from their colleagues or litigants. This bias affects not just women advocates, but also those on the bench."

Gujarat pays Covid death relief to 22,000 persons through DBT

The Gujarat government on Tuesday announced that it has deposited Rs 50,000 relief amount each through direct benefit transfer (DBT) into the bank accounts of around 22,000 persons as per the Supreme Court defined Covid deaths in their families during the pandemic period.

The revenue minister and the official spokesperson of the Gujarat government, Rajendra Trivedi said, "The state government has till date received over 38,000 applications for Covid-19 death relief aid and till now we have released relief money in 22,000 cases through DBT."

The death toll in Monday's terrorist attack on a police bus in Jammu and Kashmir rose to three on Tuesday with a constable succumbing to his injuries, while the union territory's police chief vowed that perpetrators would be brought to justice very soon.

Constable Rameez Ahmad of the ninth battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police died at the Army's 92 Base Hospital Tuesday morning, officials said.

BSF camel contingent, ITBP 'dare devil' bikers to participate in Republic Day parade next year

The famed BSF camel contingent, the 'dare devil' bikers of the ITBP and the marching contingents of other paramilitary forces like the CRPF and the CISF will be part of the Republic Day parade 2022 to be hosted at the revamped central vista here, officials said on Tuesday.

Six contingents from the forces under the command of the Union Home Ministry have been approved for participation in the national parade on Republic Day next year after consultations with the Defence Ministry.

As per a directive of the ceremonials unit of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Border Security Force (BSF) camel contingent, along with the mounted band, and marching contingents along with band teams of the Delhi Police, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) will participate in the event that traditionally marches down from the Raisina Hill to the Rajpath wearing military regalia.

11 CMs of BJP-ruled states to offer prayers at Ram Janmabhoomi on Wednesday

Eleven chief ministers of BJP-ruled states will offer prayers at the makeshift temple at Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya on Wednesday.

Protocol officials of the 11 chief ministers and three deputy chief ministers reached Ayodhya on Tuesday.

The chief ministers were expected to arrive in Lucknow from Varanasi on Tuesday evening and after a night stay in the state capital, reach Ayodhya by 11 am on Wednesday, a senior district official said.

They will visit the Hanumangarhi temple around 2 pm and then offer prayers at the Ram Janmabhoomi, where a temple in being constructed.

Schools for classes 1 to 7 to reopen in Mumbai on Dec 15

Schools for classes 1 to 7 will reopen in Mumbai on Wednesday, over 20 months after they were shut for physical classes due to the outbreak of the pandemic and imposition of restrictions.

The order to reopen the schools was issued by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on Tuesday.

The schools were closed in March 2020 in the Maharashtra capital after the outbreak of the pandemic.

Earlier, the decision to reopen schools from December 4 was postponed due to the detection of Omicron variant of coronavirus. As of Monday, Maharashtra's tally of the Omicron cases stood at 20, including 5 patients in Mumbai.

Gender stereotyping row: AIADMK slams CBSE

NDA constituent and main opposition in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK on Tuesday rued the controversial question in a CBSE class 10 English paper, that was slammed for gender stereotyping and sought action against those responsible for it.

AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam said CBSE was duty bound to advice those setting question papers to ensure the content was not against the society, while controversial and those that "could incite violence" should be avoided.

"CBSE also has a responsibility to monitor if the question paper is framed accordingly," Panneerselvam said in a party statement here. In the class 10 exam conducted on Saturday, the question paper carried a comprehension passage with sentences such as "emancipation of women destroyed the parents' authority over the children" and "it was only by accepting her husband's way that a mother could gain obedience over the younger ones", among others.

Excerpts from the passage have gone viral on social media platforms earlier, with users calling out the board for supporting "misogynistic" and "regressive opinions" and the hashtag "#CBSEinsultswomen" trending on Twitter.

Attack on police bus was planned: IGP Kashmir

The attack on a police bus here that claimed the lives of three cops was pre-planned as the armed police team was returning to camp at same time it usually did after performing routine duties, a senior police official said on Tuesday.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar was speaking to reporters at the wreath-laying ceremony for one of the slain policemen.

"The bus carrying 25 policemen was returning to the camp, as per routine, when three terrorists of Jaish-e-Mohammad opened fire on the vehicle," he said.

"This was a planned attack. They must have conducted recce and seen that the bus is coming back every day in routine after getting off duty," the officer said said.

People chopping off someone's leg, throwing it on road is scary: Kerala HC

Referring to the recent killing of a man by a gang of 12 assailants who chopped off the victim's leg and threw the limb on the road as they fled the site, Kerala High Court has said it was a "scary" situation in the state.

"People chopping off someone's leg and throwing it on the road. It is scary. They (assailants) are all probably drug addicts and heavily into substance abuse. Where are we going like this," Justice Devan Ramachandran said.

The remarks came during hearing a batch of petitions related to assignment of land to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in the state.

During the hearing, the court said that while the government was saying it will provide housing to these people, how will it ensure they have a source of livelihood? It pointed out that over 50 lakh from other states were working in Kerala, but people here do not have jobs.
