News Highlights: RBI imposes restrictions on New Delhi-based Ramgarhia Co-op Bank

The RBI on Friday imposed several restrictions on New Delhi-based Ramgarhia Co-operative Bank, including a cap of Rs 50,000 on withdrawal per depositor, in view of the lender's deteriorating financial condition.

The restrictions came into effect after the close of business on Friday and will remain in force for six months, the Reserve Bank said in a statement while issuing the directions under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

The bank cannot, without prior approval of the RBI, grant or renew any loans, make investments or accept fresh deposits.

"In particular, a sum not exceeding Rs 50,000 of the total balance across all savings bank or current accounts or any other account of a depositor, may be allowed to be withdrawn...," the RBI said. - PTI.

. The suspected killer of Japan's former prime minister Shinzo Abe admitted targeting the politician and said he held a grudge against an organisation he believed Abe was connected to, police said Friday.

Senior police officers in the western region of Nara, where the murder took place, named the suspect as unemployed 41-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami, who said he had used a handmade gun.

"That's the suspect's assertion, and we have determined that (the gun) is clearly handmade in appearance, although our analysis is currently ongoing," an officer told reporters. - AFP.

. Britain's opposition Labour party leader Keir Starmer and his deputy Angela Rayner were on Friday cleared by police of breaking lockdown rules at a campaign gathering.

"Durham Constabulary will not be issuing any fixed penalty notices (fines) in respect of the gathering and no further action will be taken," the force said in a statement.

Both politicians had said they would quit if they were fined over the event in Durham, northeast England, in April last year. - AFP.

. Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on Friday ordered enhanced security for Cabinet ministers and other politicians following the fatal shooting of former prime minister Shinzo Abe during an election campaign in western Japan's Nara city.

Kishida, who along with his Cabinet ministers hastily returned to Tokyo from campaign events around the country after the shooting, condemned the attack as “dastardly and barbaric".

The prime minister, after discussing responses to the attack with National Public Safety Commission Chairperson Ninoyu Satoshi, Justice Minister Furukawa Yoshihisa, and others for about 20 minutes on Friday afternoon, told officials never to yield to violence and terrorism. - PTI.

. The police have seized 110 kg of cannabis worth Rs 11 lakh and arrested one person for smuggling the contraband in Maharashtra's Thane city, police said on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, the crime unit V (Wagle Estate) laid a trap near Kapurbawdi fire station around 9 pm on Thursday and intercepted a tempo, senior inspector Vikas Ghodke said.

The police team surrounded the tempo, nabbed the driver and searched the vehicle to find 10 gunny sacks containing the contraband, he said. The police arrested tempo driver Ambalal Jagdish Jat and seized the substance worth Rs 11 lakh, the official said, adding that a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered in this regard. - PTI.

. Several former corporators from Navi Mumbai and Kalyan Dombivali civic bodies in Maharashtra's Thane district on Friday expressed support for the Shiv Sena faction of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the move coming a day after their Thane counterparts did the same.

A functionary of the faction said 40 of the 84 ex-Shiv Sena corporators in the 122-member Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation and 32 of the 38 ex-Sena corporators in the 111-member Navi Mumbai civic body have expressed support for Shinde.

Of the 67 corporators the Sena had in the Thane Municipal Corporation general body, the tenure of which ended some months ago, 66 have said they are now part of the Shinde faction. - PTI.
