<p>Mumbai: In what was a mere formality, the Devendra Fadnavis-led MahaYuti government won the trust vote in the <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/india/maharashtra">Maharashtra</a> Legislative Assembly by a voice vote even as Rahul Narwekar was unanimously elected Speaker - a second term for him.</p><p>Fadnavis was sworn in as Chief Minister and Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Ministers on 5 December by Governor C P Radhakrishnan.</p><p>During the brief 7-9 December special session, the newly-elected MLAs were administered oath by Pro-tem Speaker Kalidas Kolambkar. </p><p>Narwakar (47) was the candidate of MahaYuti, which commands a strength of 236 in the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, however, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi has not fielded any candidate because of the numbers. </p><p>Narwekar is a two-time MLA from the prestigious Colaba seat of Mumbai and had been an MLC earlier before that.</p><p>This is Narwekar’s second term as a Speaker. In the previous term, he had presided over the disqualification cases involving Eknath Shinde-Shiv Sena vs Uddhav Thackeray-headed Shiv Sena (UBT) and Ajit Pawar-ledNCP vs Sharad Pawar-headed NCP (SP) from 2022-24. </p>.Vidhan Bhavan shouldn't become 'bazaar', says Fadnavis; calls for crowd management.<p>Fadnavis proposed Narwekar’s name which was seconded by Shinde, Pawar among others.</p><p>Fadnavis thanked the opposition for not fielding candidates and maintained the custom of having the Speaker elected unanimously. </p><p>However, the Shiv Sena (UBT) members led by Aaditya Thackeray, the legislature party leader, boycotted the processings.</p><p>“Everybody knows about the MLAs who escaped to Surat and then Guwahati. Everybody has seen how this person, elected as the Speaker, helped run an unconstitutional government in the last two and half years. It is still fresh in our minds how he gave a ruling which affected Shiv Sena and NCP,” said Aaditya.</p><p>Fadnavis, Shinde, Pawar, state Congress President Nana Patole, state NCP (SP) President Jayant Patil among others escorted Narwekar to the Speaker’s Chair, from where he took over from Kolambkar. </p><p>Narwekar is a lawyer by profession and has knowledge of Constitutional issues.<br>At one point of time, Narwekar was a member of the undivided Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, which he left after the party denied him a ticket in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. He then joined the undivided Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party and contested the Lok Sabha election in 2019 from Maval, which he lost. Thereafter, ahead of 2019 Vidhan Sabha polls, he joined the BJP and won the Colaba seat. </p><p>After the Speaker’s election and welcome by members, Shiv Sena MLA Uday Samant, NCP MLA and former Speaker Dilip Walse-Patil and BJP's Sanjay Kute and others moved the trust motion which was passed by a voice vote. “The confidence motion has been passed by majority,”said Narwekar. </p>
