Mumbai: The RSS and BJP are pursuing their long-standing agenda of replacing the Constitution with Manusmriti, Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal said on Friday.
.
He was reacting to RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale's demand that "secular" and "socialist" be dropped from the Preamble of the Constitution.
.
Addressing an event organised on Emergency on Thursday, Hosabale said, "The Preamble to the Constitution Babasaheb Ambedkar made never had these words. During Emergency, when fundamental rights were suspended, Parliament did not work, the judiciary became lame, then these words were added." "Such statements are not isolated ones but part of a consistent ideological effort by the Sangh Parivar. The RSS and BJP have never truly accepted the Constitution drafted by Dr BR Ambedkar. Their agenda to impose the Manusmriti in place of the Constitution has always been apparent. Hosabale's demand is yet another confirmation of that agenda," Sapkal told reporters.
.CM Siddaramaiah attacks RSS over call to drop 'socialist', 'secular' from Constitution, BJP calls him 'second-hand secular'.
The Manusmriti is a legal text considered as a Hindu "dharmashastra".
.
Top RSS and BJP leaders have repeatedly made statements indicating their intention to amend or review the Constitution, he said.
.
"During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP leaders openly stated that if they win 400 seats, they would change the Constitution. Even RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat called for a review of the Constitution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's economic advisor Bibek Debroy too publicly supported the idea of amending the Constitution. None of these remarks were disowned by the BJP," Sapkal claimed.
.
He further noted that the Supreme Court had, just seven months ago, reaffirmed that secularism and socialism are core features of the Constitution.
.
"Despite this, Sangh and BJP leaders continue to issue misleading statements aimed at creating confusion. It is part of a calculated move to dismantle the foundational values of our democracy. The identity of India lies in its unity in diversity, which is what irritates the RSS-BJP combine," he said.
.
The true agenda of the RSS-BJP revolves around Hindu, Hindi, and Hindu Rashtra, Sapkal claimed.
.
"Every citizen who believes in democracy and the Constitution must recognize this agenda and remain vigilant to safeguard the republic," Sapkal asserted.
