Manipur: Six Arambai Tenggol members arrested for abduction, death of a person

One Md Nawash was kidnapped from his house on Tuesday for ransom by suspected members of the group, they said.

Guwahati: Police in conflict-torn Manipur arrested six members of Arambai Tenggol, an influential Meitei radical group, on charges of abduction and death of a 33-year-old person on Tuesday.

Police said the person was abducted from his house at Keirang Mayai Leikai area by suspected members of Arambai Tenggol for ransom, who was later brought dead to Thoubal district hospital.

The arrested six persons were identified as Sagolsem Chingkheinganba Singh, Chingakham Sanatomba Singh, Sapam Somorjit Singh, Maibam Bokenjit Singh, Athokpam Jiban Singh and Chingakham Mani Singh.

Sources in police said the person, identified as Mohammad Nawash, was beaten up by his abducotrs and was taken to hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Arambai Tenggol, an influential Meitei radical group, has been accused of investment in several abduction and extortion cases in the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley districts. Three members of the organization were earlier arrested for another extortion case.

Tenggol leaders, however, on Thursday said that some of its former members were involved in the case. They assured to help the police in the investigation of the case. Tenggol was also accused by the Kukis for attacks several times.
