The current tuition fee for engineering courses at NITs is Rs 35,000 per annum. The institutions have proposed to enhance it to Rs 50,000 per annum for their BTech and MTech programmes from the 2012-13 academic session.
The NITs have contended that the fee at other Centrally funded technical institutions, including Indian Institutes of Technology, is higher than the amount charged by them.
The proposal was taken up at a meeting of the council of the NITs. Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal suggested that the matter be further examined by a committee.
The call for increasing the fee follows a recent recommendation made by the Anil Kakodkar Committee for a four-fold hike in the fees of IITs.
