Goojawara, Nowhatta, Rajourikadal,Alikadal, Bohrikadal, Kawdara and some other areas in the old city witnessed a complete shutdown on Saturday against alleged atrocities by police after prayers on Friday. Shops and other business establishments remained closed and transport services were adversely affected.

The local people alleged that cops committed atrocities while dispersing protesters after Friday prayers. But police denied the allegations and said actions were taken only against violent protesters, who pelted men in uniform with stones.

On Saturday the youth, too, came to streets at Nowhata and held demonstrations. They also threw stones at police and paramilitary personnel. Nowhatta police station also came under attack.

Senior separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Shabir Ahmad Shah are under house arrest.
