Teachers recruitment scam: CBI summons TMC's Abhishek Banerjee, he says 'contempt of court'

An agency official said the notice was prepared on Sunday and delivered on Monday

Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee on Monday claimed that a CBI notice for appearance was hand-delivered to him despite the Supreme Court earlier in the day staying a Calcutta HC order to question him in primary teachers' recruitment scam.

“In its desperation to ‘harass’ and ‘target’ me, BJP EXPOSES CBI & ED to CONTEMPT OF COURT! SC stayed the Calcutta HC’s order in the morn that granted permission to the Central Agencies to summon me. Yet, the ‘SUMMON’ was HAND-DELIVERED today at 1:45 pm. Grave State of affairs! (sic)” Banerjee tweeted.

Banerjee also shared a document with his tweet, a "notice" from the Office of the DIG & Head of Branch, CBI Anti-Corruption Branch.

The notice dated April 16, addressed to Banerjee, asked him to appear on Tuesday at 11 am, “for the purpose of examination in compliance of order” dated April 13, passed by HC in connection with a case.

On April 13, the HC had said if the agencies did not question Banerjee within a short time, it would be compelled to pass certain orders which may be unsavoury to them.

Upon a mentioning made by senior advocate Abhishek M Singhvi, a bench ordered that till the next date of listing, there shall be a stay on all action against the petitioner in relation to the directions passed in the impugned order. The court fixed the matter on April 24.
