'Were you supposed to perform surgery': Boss demands pics, GPS location from employee during medical emergency

In a recent X post, a woman claimed that her manager demanded her GPS location, hospital photos, and medical prescriptions for a family member's medical emergency that she had to attend.

She said that she had already informed her team beforehand that she would be missing a work seminar as a relative would be undergoing surgery for cancer. However, her manager allegedly ignored the prior communications and instead demanded for proof of her whereabouts during the emergency.

"There was a seminar at work yesterday. I had already told my team lead I wouldn't be able to attend. But the manager told me to come yesterday. I told him that a family member had cancer surgery, and this happened," she said in the post while attaching a screenshot of the conversation with her boss.

The situation escalated as her boss repeatedly asked her to send him proof in the form of prescriptions and GPS location. "Were you supposed to perform the surgery?" the manager was seen telling the employee in the conversation.

The manager allegedly yelled at her and instructed her to apologise via email and additionally send hospital documents. Shocked by this behaviour, the woman decided to quit as stated in a continuation of her post that reads, “He also yelled at me for 20-30 minutes, and then told me to go home and send him an apology email along with hospital prescription pictures. I sent him a resignation email instead.”

Netizens reacted to the incident with disbelief as they were shocked by the lack of empathy in the workplace. While many commented urging her to complain to HR about the manager, she responded saying that any such attempt would be futile as “he’s close with top management because he has been working there for 17 years.”

Another commented, “Resignation muh pe maarna tha (should've thrown the resignation letter at his face)." One user shared a similar experience in the comment section, stating “these people are ruthless, i had severe tonsillitis one time and i was told that my leave won’t be a paid one. In Fact, I was asked to present my medical prescription when I came back. Never went back, best decision.”
