Why don't you work?: Supreme Court raps woman for demanding BMW, Mumbai flat from husband in alimony

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday rapped a woman, who demanded a luxury flat in Mumbai, Rs 12 crore in maintenance, and a BMW car from husband in a matrimonial dispute.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India B R Gavai, while expressing its surprise asked her to work and earn the privilege in view of her qualifications.

"You are so educated, you should not ask these things, rather you should earn by doing job," the bench said.

The court suggested her that she should do something in her field, as she was from the field of IT.

"You have done your MBA. You are in demand in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Why don't you work," the bench asked her.

Questioning the rationale of her demand in seeking alimony from her husband, the court further said, "You were married for just 18 months. And you also want a BMW?"

"You are practically asking for an alimony of Rs one crore for every month of her 18-month marriage," the bench said.

The woman claimed she made her demand on the basis of her husband's wealth. She also accused him of abandoning her unfairly.

"He is very rich. He sought annulment, saying I'm schizophrenic. Do I look schizophrenic," she submitted.

To justify her demand of the alimony, she claimed that her husband, who was a former Citibank manager, ran two businesses, and forced her to quit her previous job.

The court asked the woman to "be satisfied" with the flat and take up a "good job".

The court suggested her to take Rs 4 crore, find a good job in Pune, Hyderabad or Bengaluru, as there is a demand in IT sectors.

Senior Advocate Madhavi Divan, representing the husband, said the woman must also share the responsibility for her livelihood. "She has to work, too. Everything cannot be demanded like this," Divan said.
