The old and outdated coaches of mail and express trains will be upgraded with modern amenities under the Railways' Utkrisht project.

The national transporter has rolled out the first lot of trains with refurbished rakes, which includes the Kalka Mail from Howrah station to Old Delhi, on Wednesday.

The Railways plans to develop 640 Utkrisht rakes at a cost of Rs 400 crore over the next two years, Rajesh Agarwal, Member, Rolling Stock, Railway Board, said here.

All refurbished coaches of this rake are fitted with energy efficient LED tubelights, panel of LED lights in the doorway and gangway, dustbins in the toilets, stickers with 'Go Green' messages, provision of integrated basin-cum-dustbins in AC coaches.

Nightglow stickers and braille signages inside the coaches, new colour scheme, toilets with improved fittings with advantages of less water consumption, no choking of the system, complete sealing of odour and maintenance friendly features are some of the other modern twists, the officer said.
