'Measures taken to ease traffic congestion'

Last Updated 12 March 2019, 17:47 IST

City Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil has said that measures have been taken to ease traffic congestion and implement traffic rules effectively under the Mangaluru Police City Commissionerate jurisdiction.

He said that 20 solar blinker single heads have been installed at main junctions to check accidents at night.

He said the parking of vehicles in no-parking places was causing an inconvenience to the movement of pedestrians and had become a headache for the police personnel. A total of 100 wheel clamps have been procured to introduce ‘wheel-clamping’ in a bid to check parking violations in the city. Vehicles, mainly four-wheelers parked in no-parking areas, will be locked with the wheel clamp, he added.

Patil said 300 reflective jackets have been procured for the safety of traffic constables who manage traffic in the night on arterial junctions.

Patil had tweeted recently (handle@compolmlr) that zebra crossings at important circles have received a fresh coat of paint to make the roads pedestrian friendly. Vehicles stepping on this zebra crossing when red signal lights are on will be fined, he said.

Thermoplastic road marking paints were used while applying fresh coats of paint on zebra crossings in 2045 square metre area including Lalbagh Junction, Bunts Hostel Junction, Ambedkar Circle, Balmatta Junction, PVS Junction, Karavali Circle and Hampankatta Circle and so on. In a bid to check drunk driving, the police have procured 12 alchobreath analysers to initiate action against violators and serve automated notices, he added.

CCTV cameras

He said CCTV cameras have been installed at strategic locations for maintaining law and order and also to impose fine on the traffic rule violators. Now, measures have been taken to upgrade CCTV cameras in the city limits.

Further, 30 multifunctional devices have been procured to check traffic violations. The device has facilities of serving notices and automated fine on the spot, which will also result in transparency, Patil explained.
