Popularly known as ‘Sufi ki Sultana’ for her soulful Sufi renditions, Harshdeep Kaur is a popular name in the Bollywood and Punjabi music circuit.

She started young, at the age of 15, when she sang ‘Sajna Main Haari’ in ‘Aapko Pehle Bhi Kahin Dekha Hai’. In a career spanning two decades, Kaur has sung for most major Hindi film composers including AR Rahman and Amit Trivedi.

The singer just wrapped up shooting for the Smule Mirchi Cover Star 2021.

The singer who recently gave birth to a baby boy, spoke to Metrolife about her experience in the industry throughout the pandemic.

How has your experience been working in this new world? How much has the industry changed since Covid-19?

The initial days of the lockdown were very difficult. We were all completely stuck at home, but the work never stopped. Thanks to technology, we all soon figured how to make things work. I created a home setup, got a new mic and recording software.

I also learned how to record vocals on my own. I even learned to do my own make-up and hair and shot my own videos. The experience we went through last year really taught me a lot and for that, I’m really grateful.

As an artist what did you miss the most last year?

I love being on the stage and performing for my fans. The stage makes me feel alive. I missed that the most. But the virtual concerts we did last year did provide some solace. I feel they brought me closer to my fans.

How was it working throughout your
pregnancy?

It’s been great. I never felt the need to take a break. I’ve been on set the past few days recording music and also shooting. Pregnancy is a beautiful phase but it is also just a part of life. It gives you more energy to work and doesn’t hold you back.

You just finished shooting for a reality show, what are your views on the impact such shows can have on the participants’ mental health?

Before you make the decision to enter such competitions, it’s very important that you’re stable both physically and mentally.

Even in life in general, there will always be competition and pressure. It’s common to feel like everyone else is doing better than you. But as long as you learn to go with the flow and enjoy what you do then it’ll all be fine. Follow your passion, don’t worry about the outcome.

Any exciting projects coming up?

I just finished singing a film song for Amit Trivedi. I’m also working on composing more songs for my own label, so that should be out soon. Really looking forward to that.
