MIMS hospital cries for attention

Last Updated 31 December 2018, 17:39 IST

Lack of maintenance of toilets, water supply and electricity system at Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) here are causing difficulties to the patients.

The toilets at the hospital wards emanate unbearable stench as there is no water. Also, insufficient lighting has affected the movement of patients in the wards during the night. But, the hospital authorities have not taken any measures.

According to sources, there is no water supply in toilets since over a month. The urinals and sinks are in a pathetic condition. This forces the patients to go in search of toilets in other wards and also outside the hospital. With only a few lights functioing, it is difficult for them to move around during the
night.

Though there is no shortage of water on MIMS premises, clogged pipelines are said to be the reason behind the water problem. No steps have been taken to repair the pipes and restore water supply, complain patients.

Farmer leader Holalu Nagaraju said one of his relatives was admitted to the MIMS Hospital for two weeks. “I was shocked to see the condition of the toilet. A hospital with such an environment may spread more diseases rather than curing them. Crores of rupees have been spent for the construction of the hospital. But, there is no proper water facility. Besides, the switches in most of the wards have worn out with live wires hanging out, inviting danger. A ward with 100 beds has only a couple of lights. The authorities have totally neglected the issue,” he said.

Nagamma, a patient from Koppa, in Maddur taluk, complained that she has been shifted to the ward after surgery. As there is no proper lighting, she is finding it difficult to identify the tablets.

When contacted, MIMS Superintendent Dr Harish said he will inspect the wards and take up repair of the pipelines. Bulbs will be fixed, he added.
