21 Bangladeshis deported from Assam

Last Updated 19 January 2019, 18:28 IST

Twenty-one of the 54 Bangladeshi nationals, lodged in detention centres inside Assam jails for illegally entering India, were deported on Saturday.

The Bangladeshis including two women were handed over to officials of the neighbouring country through Sutarkandi immigration check post in Karimganj district in South Assam. They were lodged in a foreigner detention camp inside Silchar central jail and had already completed their jail terms for violating the Indian Passport Act, officials in Assam said.

They are residents of Sylhet, Gopalganj and Kishorganj districts in Bangladesh. "They had wished to go back to their homes after completion of their jail terms. Accordingly, their address details were shared with Bangladesh officials through the office of Bangladesh assistant high commissioner in Guwahati. After their addresses were verified, they were handed over," said an official.

Officials said 33 more illegal migrants from Bangladesh are still lodged in Silchar, Kokrajhar and Tezpur jails in Assam.
