Close on the heels of reprimand from the Supreme Court, the ruling Janata Dal (United) on Thursday suspended former minister Manju Verma from the party.

Manju quit as Bihar’s Social Welfare Minister after the CBI probe into the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case found that her husband Chandrashekhar Verma was in regular touch with main accused Brajesh Thakur.

Later the police conducted raids at her Begusarai house and found live cartridges. She was booked under the Arms Act. However, she has been evading arrest since then.

The Supreme Court, expressing shock and anguish over the Bihar Police failure to arrest her, has asked the DGP and the chief secretary to appear before the apex court and explain the lapse.

Earlier, on October 29, Manju’s husband surrendered before the court. He was sent to jail.
