Cong mulling to go solo in 2019 UP polls

State party leaders feel that the grand old party may not be a part of the proposed grand alliance

''It seems that the SP and the BSP are interested only in taking and not in giving. For an alliance all sides should show flexibility,'' a senior state Congress leader said.

With the Congress' hopes dashed for an electoral alliance with the BSP and the SP in the poll-bound states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the party is now mulling to fight alone in Uttar Pradesh in the next general elections.

According to sources in the state Congress in Lucknow, the party feels that it may not be a part of the proposed grand alliance consisting of the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) in the state.

''It seems that the SP and the BSP are interested only in taking and not in giving. For an alliance all sides should show flexibility,'' a senior state Congress leader said.

The leader said that the Congress may find it difficult to get the number of seats it wanted to contest in the state in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Sources said that the Congress wanted to contest 15 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state, but it was doubtful if the SP and the BSP would be ready to oblige to the grand old party.

Congress had won two seats in 2014 and finished runners up on six others.

Sources said that Congress leaders had already identified the seats it would focus on and the party was also trying to persuade some senior state leaders to jump in the fray.

Sources said that BSP supremo Mayawati was not very enthusiastic about including the Congress in the grand alliance. ''The BSP may not be willing to sacrifice its seats to accommodate the Congress,'' a party leader said.

Sources said that the BSP had been insisting on contesting at least 40 seats leaving the rest for the others.

SP sources said that the Congress at best could be offered five seats, including Raebareli and Amethi which are represented by Sonia Gandhi and party president Rahul Gandhi respectively.
