JOIN USHeavy rains continued to lash parts of the capital city for the fifth consecutive day.
The State Revenue Department set up a control room to assess rain-related damage in the district. The Meteorological Department (MeT) also issued an alert to fishermen in the backdrop of predictions of heavy winds along the coast.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority held a meeting on Tuesday to assess preparedness by various departments. Southern districts of the state are on an alert after the Met forecast indicated heavy to very heavy rains over the next couple of days. District collectors were issued weather alerts on Monday. An alert has also been issued to tourists visiting high-range and coastal areas.
The Meteorological Centre in Thiruvananthapuram has predicted thundershowers in isolated areas in the state for another week.
Thiruvananthapuram city recorded 4 cm rainfall on Tuesday. Trees were uprooted after thundershowers and heavy winds hit some parts of the city. Kottarakkara in Kollam district recorded the day’s heaviest rainfall with 5 cm.
Meanwhile, with the formation of well marked low pressure area over Comorin area on Tuesday, heavy rain lashed the southern districts of Tamil Nadu even as weathermen predicted more downpour in the next 48 hours over the same region.
“Yesterday’s low pressure area over Comorin area has become more marked. This well marked low pressure area may concentrate into a depression and move Northwesterly direction by tomorrow. This will bring heavy rains over south Tamil Nadu and Kerala,” a senior official from Met Department told Deccan Herald.
Southern districts of Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Kaniyakumari, Cuddalore, Sivaganga, Trichy and Theni received heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours.
