It's not the time to decide PM candidate: Mamata

Last Updated 31 December 2018, 10:55 IST

Days after DMK president M K Stalin pitched Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s name as the prime ministerial candidate of the 'united opposition', West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said that this is not the time to take such decisions.

“It is not the time to discuss the issue (of the name of the prime ministerial candidate). This will be decided by all the opposition parties together after the elections,” the CM told reporters at the state secretariat.

Asked whether she is one of the contenders for the post, Banerjee said that any decision in this regard will be taken "unanimously" by the opposition parties. “Let the Lok Sabha elections come first. Any decision regarding this will be unanimously taken by the opposition parties.”

Earlier, the DMK supremo has not only proposed Rahul Gandhi’s name as the prime ministerial candidate of the opposition, but also said that the Congress president has the “ability to defeat the fascist and Nazist Modi government.”
