Shampukur Assembly seat had the dubious distinction of being the lone seat in West Bengal in 1971 where the elections were countermanded twice due to the murder of candidates.

It was the time that Bengal was witnessing a wave of violence of unprecedented magnitude.

First, Forward Bloc’s Hemanta Kumar Basu was killed on February 20, 1971.

Ajit Kumar Biswas replaced him and he too was killed on May 28, necessitating a second countermand of the poll in the constituency
