The Indian Army has started an investigation after a soldier hailing from Amritsar, Punjab and posted under the Northern Command was found to be passing data to Pakistani operatives.

Sources said the soldier was caught red-handed by his seniors. After the incident came to light, a Court of Inquiry was ordered to probe how the soldier could get access to the data and the extent to which it was leaked to the operatives of Pakistani agencies.

“The probe would also find out how deeply the soldier was engaged with the enemy operatives and how much vital data he may have passed on to the enemy operatives,” a source said and added the mobile phone of the accused soldier is also being checked.

“The inquiry will also find out whether some other persons were involved with him or he has himself got and leaked the data,” a source said and added the source from where he got the data is also being traced.

A local newspaper reported that the data breach took place when the Indian Army was engaged in a military stand-off with the People's Liberation Army of China in the Ladakh region.

The Udhampur-based Northern Command is in charge of security on both China and Pakistan borders in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh sectors.
