Panel suggests early announcement for 5G policy

Last Updated 19 September 2018, 07:10 IST

A high-level panel on Thursday suggested the Department of Telecom to announce the policy on 5G spectrum by end of this year and recommended the allocation of additional airwave bands for supporting the next generation technology.

The committee on identifying the 5G road map also suggested that free bandwidth should be assigned for trials for a fixed time frame to allow setting up of the network.

To enable early rolling of 5G, the DOT must take steps to clear all hurdles as the next generation technology would help a number of sectors including education, healthcare and agriculture.

The panel headed by Professor Emeritus A J Paulraj said India is likely to see the first 5G commercial launch in 2020.

The government needs to keep in mind that even after the entry of 5G into Indian networks, 2G,3G and 4G will continue to remain in use and it may take 10 or more years to phase out.
