Rise in farmer suicides in Kerala

Approximately 10 farmer have taken the drastic step since the beginning of November. All of these farmers had huge liabilities to financial institutions and had found repayment very difficult. The steep fall in the prices of agricultural crops is the main reason for the crisis.

The farmers who committed suicide in the last two days are from Wayanad, Kannur and Palakkad in north Kerala. All of them had taken loans from public sector banks and micro-financing institutions.
