Two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants, a policeman and a civilian were killed in an encounter in Fateh Kadal area of old city Srinagar early Wednesday morning, police said.

A police official said that the gunfight broke out early morning after a joint team of police and paramilitary CRPF cordoned off the Fateh Kadal area following specific inputs about the presence of militants in a house.

“As the search party approached the suspected house, the militants opened fire which was retaliated, triggering a gunfight,” he said, adding that a policeman, identified as Kamal from Reasi died in the initial shootout.

“Two militants and the son of the house owner were killed in the gunfight. Three CRPF personnel were also injured in the gunfight. The firing has stopped but searches are underway,” the official added.

Sources said the one of the slain militant is top Lashkar commander Mehraj Bangroo, who hails from Fateh Kadal while his associate his from neighbouring Khanyar area. The site of the encounter is close to where suspected militants shot dead two workers of the National Conference earlier this month.

Earlier SSP Srinagar Imtiyaz Ismail Parray had said that three militants and a policeman were killed in the gunfight.

Following the gunfight, all educational institutions were closed in Srinagar while Internet suspended were also snapped. Reports said clashes erupted in Fateh Kadal and Khanyar area of the city. Several journalists were reportedly thrashed by the forces near the encounter site.

The encounter in Srinagar occurred barely a day after municipal elections concluded on Tuesday peacefully.
