TMC MPs move privilege motion against Assam top Cop

Trinamool Congress MPs on Monday staged a protest demonstration in Parliament House here, denouncing the BJP governments at the Centre and in Assam for detaining some of them at Silchar Airport in the north-eastern state.

Party MP Saugata Roy also moved a privilege motion in the Lok Sabha against the Assam Government and its Director General of Police alleging that the cops manhandled four women TMC members of the Lower House of Parliament at Silchar.

“They (MPs) wanted to assess the situation in Assam after the publication of the NRC (National Register of Citizens). They were manhandled and not allowed to go outside the airport,” Roy said during Zero Hour.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said that the privilege motion was under her consideration.

The TMC MPs earlier on Monday staged a protest with placards that read, “Stop This Super Emergency” and “Stop Degrading All Institutions”.

Party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Government during her three-day visit to New Delhi last week, focusing mostly on 40 lakh people being left out of the draft NRC in Assam.

Banerjee had on Thursday last sent a delegation of her party – comprising six MPs as well as an MLA and a minister of the state – to visit Barak Valley in southern Assam, where many of the people left out of the draft NRC live.

Protest held

The MPs' delegation included four women members of Lok Sabha. As soon as they landed at the airport at Kumbhigram in Silchar, they were stopped by local police. Citing apprehensions that their visit may disrupt law and order, the police personnel told the TMC leaders that they would not be allowed to go out as prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC was in force after the draft NRC was published.
