In a shocking incident, a doctor at a Covid Care Centre in Maharashtra's Aurangabad tried to molest a patient who was seeking discharge from the centre.

The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation has dismissed the doctor from service over the incident.

The issue was highlighted at the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly by BJP MLA Manisha Choudhary following news reports that the doctor demanded sexual favours from the patient and attempted to rape her at the centre in the Padampura area of Aurangabad.

Lashing out at the Uddhav Thackeray government, Leader of the Opposition Devendra Fadnavis said that he had written four letters to the chief minister on the rise in incidents of crime against women at such centres and had sought standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb them.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar assured the House that the SOPs would be in place by March 31.

Elaborating on the incident, Pawar said, “We have gathered information...no rape has taken place. There was an incident of attempted molestation....whatever has happened is serious and that is why there is no denying the fact. The doctor has been dismissed.”

Pawar said that the lady and the family do not want to lodge a formal complaint.

“Besides, we have found that the lady’s husband and doctor know each other,” he said.
