Advantage Iran

Last Updated 22 January 2016, 14:29 IST

Sir,
This refers to "India must boost footprint in Iran" (DH, January 19).  Since the US, European Union and the International Atomic Energy Agency have lifted sanctions on Iran, the country should revive its economy on a grand scale.
Iran is a major producer  oil----so unlocking of its export of oil to countries should see an upward trend. President Hassan Rouhani, who took over in 2013, has been instrumental in putting the country's fortunes back on track.  He has had a significant role in Iran coming true to its commitment to the P5+ nations on the nuclear deal resulting in the US lifting nuclear economic sanctions on Iran.
For India, areas like information technology and infrastructure are areas other than oil import which it can hope to cash-in on Iran's economic revival.  The oil prices are bound to slide further much to India's advantage. More importantly, the India--Iran gas pipeline should now receive a major boost.  Also, the Chabahar port developmental work, which lies in a limbo, should be taken up with utmost urgency. Iran has been a vital country for India in the Middle East region and it should go the whole hog to build on a "new Iran".
