<p>England crushed India by five wickets in the opening Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy at Headingley in Leeds. </p><p>To add insult to injury, India set a dubious record as well in the 148 years of history in the long form of cricket. </p><p>The five centuries registered by Indian batters in Leeds -- Yashasvi Jaiswal (101, 1st innings), Shubman Gill (147, Ist innings), KL Rahul (137, 2nd innings) and Rishabh Pant (134 Ist innings, 118, 2nd innings) were the most three-figure knocks scored by a team in a losing cause a Test match.</p><p>The previous record stood in the name of Australia -- with four centuries -- in the loss to England at Melbourne in the 1928-29 series.</p><p>Despite vice-captain Pant scoring centuries in each innings and other key batters like Rahul, Jaiswal and Gill himself hitting their respective tons, India failed to get to bigger totals in both the innings and also dropped crucial catches. </p><p>India collapsed from 430 for three in the first innings to 471 losing seven wickets for 41 runs and in the second, they crumbled to 364 all-out from 333 for four, losing six wickets for 31 runs.</p><p>Individual brilliance like the twin hundreds by vice-captain Pant was not enough to stop the England juggernaut as they chased down a huge target of 371 thanks to a swashbuckling 149 from opener Ben Duckett as the hosts chased down the target with consummate ease.</p><p>England rode on a 188-run opening wicket partnership between Duckett and Zak Crawley (65) with former skipper Joe Root (53 not out) staying till the end to make sure that there were no hiccups.</p>.England beat erroneous India to clinch Headingley game.<p>Wicket-keeper batter Jamie Smith chipped in with a breezy unbeaten 44 and added an unbroken 71-run stand with Root to steer England home in the final session of the last day's play. </p><p>The second match of the series starts at Birmingham on July 2. </p><p>(With PTI inputs)</p>
