Bengaluru: The BCCI on Monday shifted three one-day games involving the touring South Africa A scheduled in November from Bengaluru to Rajkot with the stampede that killed 11 people and injured over 70 during RCB’s victory celebrations last week playing a key role in the decision.
.
The games were originally to be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium but now it’ll take place at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Nov 13, 16 and 19.
.
KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, who has been putting up a brave face despite the association being slammed from all quarters for its role in the stampede, said the decision to move the games to Rajkot had nothing to do with the stampede.
.
“This decision has nothing to do with the stampede,” Bhat told DH. “It’s not just Bengaluru that is losing a game, many other matches have been shifted,” he added, attributing to the media release BCCI sent on Monday morning regarding various venue changes for its home season.
.Chinnaswamy stampede: A Shankar and E S Jairam resign as secretary and treasurer of Karnataka State Cricket Association.
The women’s ODI World Cup is slated to begin in Bengaluru on September 30 and when asked if that too would be under threat considering the ongoing magisterial probe, Bhat said it’s too far fetched to assume so. “We are cooperating with the authorities who are investigating the stampede. It’s early to assume anything.”
.
BCCI general manager Abey Kuruvilla refused to comment on the matter when DH contacted him. “I’m not the person authorised to speak on the venue changes.”
.
Sources indicated that the Board isn’t happy about KSCA management’s role in the stampede, and this could be a way of punishing them. The tenure of the current set of KSCA office-bearers comes to an end on September 30 with the elections scheduled in October or November. How the managing committee members demitting office get the Chinnaswamy Stadium ready for the World Cup opener and other games remains to be seen.
.
Incidentally, the two four-day games between South Africa A and India will be in held in Bengaluru but at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence on the outskirts of the city. The games will be played from Oct 30-Nov 2 and Nov 6-9.
