- His father KB Chhetri played for the Indian Army team while his mother Sushila Chhetri and her twin sister played for the Nepal women's national team.

- Chhetri began his professional career at Mohun Bagan in 2002.

- On March 30, 2004, Chhetri played his first game for the Indian U-20 team. He played for the national team for the first time on June 12, 2005 and scored his maiden goal

- He has been named AIFF Player of the Year four times - 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2014

- Chhetri is married to Sonam Bhattacharya, daughter of former Indian footballer Subrata Bhattacharya.

- He had signed for English club Queen’s Park Rangers but his work permit was rejected by the British government

- Chhetri's favourite players are Lionel Messi and David Villa

- He is only the second Indian to feature in 100 international matches after former skipper Bhaichung Bhutia.
