Bengaluru: Sporting Club Bengaluru, who were set to be relegated from I-League after finishing in the bottom two, have been given a reprieve.
.
The All India Football Federation’s appeal committee has stayed their demotion after hearing the club’s plea challenging AIFF’s disciplinary panel order.
.
In the appeal, the club stated that Namdhari FC featured an “ineligible player” during the game against Bengaluru, a breach that entitles them to three points. This will also see SC Bengaluru garner 24 points and avoid relegation.
.
“There are a few remedies that we followed," Sporting Club Bengaluru co-owner and CEO Kishore S Reddy told DH. "We went to the disciplinary committee and had a hearing, saying that the player who featured was serving a suspension and ineligible to play,” he said.
.
The committee agreed with SC Bengaluru's contention and said: "We are going to give the club (Namdhari FC) a warning that they do not repeat the same and we will ask the AIFF to do their work diligently is what the disciplinary committee informed and that took us by surprise as there were no punishments for the breach,” he said.
.
Despite committee's stand, not remedy was provided to the aggrieved party which approached the appeal's panel.
.
“We said we were abiding by the rules and regulations that were provided by the AIFF and hence the team (Namdhari FC) needs to forfeit the three points.”
.
If the final decision goes Bengaluru’s way, it would also have a massive impact on the standings and potentially put Aizawl FC into the relegation zone below SCB, who will jump to 10th.
.
Earlier in the year, SC Bengaluru’s I-League campaign ended in sheer heartache as a 2-2 draw to Sreenidi Deccan FC saw them 'relegated'.
.
Talking about what the future Kishore was firm on developing talent in the state and realising the dream of playing in the Indian Super League.
.
“Our idea and vision have always been to go to ISL. That's how we have also grown in the past two, three years. We continue to grow football in Karnataka. But obviously, us staying in the I-League is something which we are looking forward to and I hope we will get justice.” he concluded.
