<p>The 33rd Sub-junior (under-17) National archery championship for boys and girls will kick off at the Sree Kanteerava stadium here on Wednesday.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Nearly 500 archers representing 25 States and two units will be vying for top honours in three categories — the traditional Indian round, recurve and compound.<br /><br />Jharkhand, which has been home to several top archers in the country including the current sensation Deepika Kumari, will start as favourites while Services and the famed Tata Archery Academy, Jamshedpur, are expected to mount a strong challenge. <br /><br />“It’s after a very long time that we (Karnataka) are to going to host a national archery event,” said Karnataka Amateur Archery Association president KJ George at a press conference here on Monday.<br /><br />“The last time we staged the Sub-juniors was way back in 1993, while the Senior Nationals was conducted further back in 1980.<br /><br />“We’ve made all the necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of the event. We’re hoping this event helps more kids take up the sport that has its roots in India.”<br /><br />Hosts Karnataka, who finished eighth in the last Nationals at Ajmer, Rajasthan, have been undergoing a 50-day camp under Brijesh Kumar in an effort to better their previous record. <br /><br />The event concludes on January 20.<br /><br />Karnataka squad: Boys: Recurve round: Raghu V, B Abhiraj Singh DP, Ajay P Nagoba, Tejas D.<br /><br />Indian round: B Abhiraj Singh DP, Tharun DV, Bharath Dixit, B Shiva Chaithanya A.
