CB Pur ZP to follow Koppal model of waste treatment

The Zilla Panchayat has decided to follow the Koppal Model of segregation and treatment of wet and dry waste in the district.

The ZP has submitted a proposal to the State government seeking consent to set up solid and liquid waste segregation and treatment plants. The works will begin once the government approves the project.

In the first phase such plants would be set up at Paresandra and Aruru gram panchayats

The ZP’s decision to set up the plants is the result of the study tour to by a delegation of 150 members recently to segregation and treatment plants of solid and liquid waste at Huligi-Hosalli in Koppal district.

The delegation comprised Zilla Panchayat president H V Manjunath, member Prakash, chief executive officer Gurudatta Hegde, deputy secretary Shashidhar, chief auditor M H Nagesh, presidents of 70 gram panchayats and executive officers of taluk panchayats.

“We’ve decided to commission 70 solid and liquid segregation and treatment plants across the district. We have already identified the lands and submitted a memorandum to the State government in this regard. Works for set up the plants will begin once the government approves the project,” H V Manjunath told DH.

He was sharing experiences of the study tour. “We studied the entire process at solid and liquid waste segregation unit at Huligi-Hosalli. We obtained details from the staff of the unit about the process to collect the waste from every house at the gram panchayat level, segregation of dry, wet, solid and liquid wastes, measures to process the garbage, management of e-waste and plastic and production of compost manure,” he said.

“Most of our people and members lack the knowledge of the importance of systematic garbage disposal and its treatment. We organised the study tour so that they saw the facilities and realised the importance of garbage treatment,” he said.

About the tour, Swachh Bharat in-charge assistant planning officer Muniraju said, “The compost manure is produced using the wet waste at the Huligi-Hosalli facility. It is also used to manufacture plastic. Tetra packs and liquor bottles are processed and sold at Mumbai. One tonne of treated tetra packs and liquor bottles earn Rs 19,000. The tour was helpful in learning valuables lessons of making money out of garbage.”
