Convince people to open bank accounts: Deve Gowda

MP H D Deve Gowda directed the officials to identify individuals in rural areas who do not have bank accounts and convince them to open accounts under Jan Dhan scheme.

Addressing a meeting of bank officials and representatives of insurance companies to discuss the loopholes in the scheme, he said a survey has to be conducted to identify the families in urban and rural areas without bank accounts.

The official representatives of the banks should visit villages coming under 258 gram panchayats and help them to open deposit less bank accounts. Each bank should select villages and expedite the same, he advised.

The last date to open account under the scheme is September 28. If any account holder of Jan Dhan scheme had passed away, the family will be eligible for Rs one lakh insurance claim, he explained.

Bank officials disclosed that 80,000 accounts have already been opened in the district. A meeting will be convened after September 28 to review the success of the scheme in the district.

If the number of people yet to be enrolled are more the authorities concerned will be requested to extend the last date, he said.
