JOIN USReligious fervour, gaiety mark Eid in Mysuru
Muslim community people celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the holy Islamic month of Ramzan, with religious fervour and gaiety in the city on Monday.
Thousands of Muslim faithfuls, clad in traditional wear, thronged the mosques in the morning and offered namaz for peace and harmony in the country and also exchanged wishes by hugging each other. Dressed up in traditional kurta pyjamas, skull caps and turbans, thousands of Muslims, including children, thronged the Eidgah Maidans in Tilak Nagar and other areas, where mass prayers were organised. The Imams, who led the prayers, appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony and prayed for the wellness and prosperity of the country.
Dignitaries such as Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Tanveer Sait, PWD and District in-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa and MLAs took part in mass prayer and extended greetings to the people on the occasion.
“On the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, I extend my warm greetings and best wishes to my fellow citizens, particularly to all Muslim brothers and sisters,” Dr Mahadevappa said.
The minister said, the festival helps strengthen the spirit of harmony and peace in the society. Islam is a symbol of secularism, and all the rituals in the religion have scientific reasons. While fasting during the month of Ramzan is good for health, it also teaches the people about hunger, and mass prayers spread the message of unity, he said.
Eid celebrations reinforce the commitment to mutual goodwill and inspire everyone to follow the path of love and universal brotherhood. The main intention of every religion is to spread love, brotherhood and equality. Religions are there for the development of humanity and not for destruction, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Sait said, “The state is reeling under drought for the past one decade or so and it is severe since the last three years. I prayed for good rains and peace in the state.”
The month of Ramzan makes Muslims to understand about the hardship of the people. In recent days, communal clashes have increased and there is a need to create a healthy and friendly environment among the citizens, he said.
Celebrations spilled onto the streets and Muslims distributed special sweet dishes, dry fruits and also served biryani and other delicacies to their near and dear ones. City Police had made elaborate security arrangements to ensure peaceful celebrations.
MLAs Vasu, and M K Somashekar, Mayor M J Ravikumar, Mysuru Paints and Varnishes Limited Chairman H A Venkatesh, Deputy Commissioner D Randeep, City Police Commissioner A S Rao, University of Mysore former vice chancellor K S Rangappa, and Corporators Suhail Baig and Sandesh Swamy were present.
