Flood threat looms over Belagavi district

Last Updated 25 October 2018, 11:58 IST

The threat of flash floods looms large over Chikkodi, Nippani, Raibag and Athani taluks in Belagavi district.

Inflow into river Krishna from its catchment areas and tributaries has swelled the river's waters to over 1 lakh cusecs for the second consecutive day on Monday.

Heavy rains in the catchments of Krishna and its tributaries Doodhganga and Vedganga have resulted in 1.17 lakh cusecs water flowing into the river from neighbouring Maharashtra state.

Water inflow into river Krishna from Rajapur barrage in Maharashtra on Monday is 93,385 cusecs and 23,760 cusecs from Doodhganga.

Water inflow at Hippargi barrage located at the border of Bagalkot at Athani taluk was 1.38 lakh cusecs and outflow 1.37 lakh cusecs.

Krishna and its tributaries have been inching above the danger mark and river Doodhganga has begun to flood agricultural lands on both banks; thereby creating fear of crops getting submerged.

Meanwhile, heavy rains continued to lash Belagavi and Khanapur taluks. Rainfall was mild and the sky remained overcast in other parts of the district.
